Nigerian Catholic Priest Dies in U.S. After Emotional Farewell Ahead of Return to Nigeria

A Nigerian Catholic priest serving on a pastoral mission in the United States, Reverend Father Benjamin Okwy Madu, has died in an incident that authorities and church officials have described as a tragedy, leaving his family, parishioners and the wider Catholic community in mourning.

Father Madu, popularly known as Father Ben, was 54 years old and hailed from Abor in Enugu State. He had been serving the Catholic community in Cape Ann, on Massachusetts’ North Shore, where he became widely admired for his pastoral work and close relationship with parishioners.

According to reports, Father Madu died on Thursday, July 2, 2026, shortly before he was due to return to Nigeria following the completion of his assignment in the United States and issues surrounding his visa status.

In a farewell message published in the parish newsletter before his death, Father Madu expressed sadness about leaving the community he had come to regard as a second home.

“Sincerely, it is not my wish to return home right now, but circumstances beyond my control have warranted that my time in the United States come to an end.”

He also wrote:

“My heart is broken, yet my joy remains. I will miss the home I found away from home… I will deeply miss the seaside, where I often drive to after Mass to call my family and hear about their Sundays.”

His death has sparked an outpouring of grief from parishioners, fellow clergy and members of the Cape Ann community, who remembered him as a compassionate priest devoted to his ministry.

Father Madu’s passing has also drawn attention to the emotional challenges that can accompany international pastoral assignments and immigration-related transitions.

He is survived by his family, friends and countless faithful whose lives he touched through his ministry.
