Former Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, CFR, has called for closer cooperation between the Nasarawa State Government and private citizens to address the needs of residents and accelerate development across the state.
Adamu, the Walin Lafia and a governorship hopeful, made the call on Wednesday during the distribution of agricultural inputs to residents of Nasarawa West Senatorial District.
The event, held at the Esu Palace in Karu Local Government Area, provided agricultural support to more than 2,800 beneficiaries drawn from 59 wards across Keffi, Karu, Kokona, Nasarawa and Toto local government areas.

Adamu described the initiative as a contribution towards improving the livelihoods and economic prospects of residents, stressing that private interventions should complement government programmes rather than be seen as political competition.
“We know the government is trying its best to provide for the people of Nasarawa, but we know that they will never be able to do for everybody,” he said.
“So let them not think that we are competing with them. No. We are only contributing our own quota.”
‘Government Cannot Do Everything’
Adamu said government remained central to development but could not, on its own, address every need across the state.
He therefore urged the government to create an environment that encourages individuals, businesses, philanthropists, traditional institutions and community organisations to support public programmes.
Such collaboration, he said, could strengthen interventions in critical areas including agriculture, education, healthcare, youth empowerment and humanitarian assistance.
The former police chief also cautioned against interpreting development initiatives primarily through political considerations.
According to him, the focus should be on improving citizens’ welfare rather than determining who receives recognition for providing assistance.
Agriculture as a Livelihood Strategy
The agricultural input distribution is expected to benefit farmers and other residents across the five local government areas of Nasarawa West.
Adamu said initiatives supporting agriculture could help strengthen household livelihoods and contribute to economic activity at the grassroots while complementing existing government programmes.
He argued that individuals with the resources to assist their communities should regard such contributions as part of their civic responsibility.
“Government has its responsibilities, but citizens who have the capacity to help also have a role to play,” he said.
Leadership Beyond Politics
With political activities ahead of the 2027 Nasarawa governorship election gaining momentum, Adamu said leadership should be measured by service and the ability to bring different stakeholders together.
He said the development of Nasarawa required a collective effort involving government, citizens, traditional institutions, businesses and community organisations.
“When everyone contributes their quota, the people become the ultimate beneficiaries,” he said.
Adamu’s remarks come as political actors in Nasarawa increasingly position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections, with issues of grassroots development, economic empowerment and public welfare expected to remain central to the political debate.
