The passing of Hon. Justice Daniel Dantsoho Abutu (Rtd), OFR, FCI Arb, has continued to draw tributes from across Nigeria, with Hon. Mark Okpanachi Ogah offering a particularly emotional reflection on the late jurist’s personal and professional impact.
In a heartfelt tribute, Hon. Ogah described Justice Abutu not just as a towering figure in Nigeria’s judiciary, but as a father figure who shaped his life in profound ways. Ogah, who once lived with the Abutu family in Lagos, said the late Justice treated him as a son, offering not only shelter, but mentorship and guidance.
“Justice Abutu was more than a legal luminary; he was a father in every sense,” Ogah said. “His presence in my life helped shape my values, strengthened my moral convictions, and inspired my pursuit of public service.”
Justice Abutu, who passed away at the age of 79, is remembered for his decades of exemplary service as a Justice of the Court of Appeal and his unwavering commitment to justice, fairness, and ethical leadership. His death marks the end of an era for the Nigerian legal system.
Funeral arrangements are ongoing, with a Valedictory Court Session scheduled for Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at the Federal High Court Headquarters in Abuja. A Service of Songs and Night of Tribute will follow on Thursday, July 3, at his residence in Lokoja. The burial and interment will take place on Friday, July 4, at his hometown in Abocho, Dekina Local Government Area, while a Thanksgiving Service will be held at CEFN Church, Gadumo, Lokoja on Sunday, July 6.
Hon. Ogah urged Nigerians, especially the legal community, to uphold the legacy of Justice Abutu by embracing integrity, wisdom, and fairness in both private and public life.
“His robes may be laid to rest, but the principles he stood for must remain alive in us,” he added.
Justice Abutu is survived by children, grandchildren, and a legacy of honor, truth, and quiet greatness.
