ABUJA – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to transform the Nigeria Police Force into a modern, tech-driven, and highly motivated security institution capable of confronting the nation’s internal security challenges.
Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Eagle Square, Abuja, during the grand finale of the 2025 Police Week on Monday, the President formally declared April 7 as National Police Day. The day, now institutionalised, will be marked annually to honour the sacrifices of fallen heroes and celebrate the valor and dedication of serving police personnel.
“As President, I reaffirm this administration’s steadfast dedication to the welfare and empowerment of the Nigeria Police Force,” Tinubu said. “A secure Nigeria is vital for our collective prosperity, and this vision begins with ensuring that our police force is well-equipped, well-trained, and well-motivated.”
The President outlined key reforms aimed at strengthening the police institution. These include improved housing, accessible healthcare, and quality education for the families of police officers, alongside better remuneration and welfare packages.
“These promises will begin to materialise immediately,” he assured. “We are also determined to equip you with modern tools and technology to enhance your effectiveness in combating crime. Furthermore, we will ensure that your salaries and benefits reflect the gravity of your responsibilities and the risks you face daily.”
He reiterated that the Federal Government would leave no stone unturned in addressing issues of banditry, insurgency, kidnapping, and other security threats across the country.
Highlighting the role of the police in national development, Tinubu described the force as the cornerstone of the nation’s internal security and the first line of defense against crime.
“April 7 is not merely a date on the calendar,” he noted. “It is a symbol of our enduring partnership and respect for the Nigeria Police Force—a day firmly entrenched in our national consciousness.”
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, while speaking at the event, said the National Police Day provides an opportunity to remember fallen heroes and renew the call for professionalism, excellence, and respect for human rights within the force. He said his leadership is committed to reforms that would build a police force trusted by the public and focused on national development.
The event featured a colourful display by tactical units of the Nigeria Police, inspection of guard by the Vice President, and a silent drill by officers.
Dignitaries in attendance included Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa; Chairmen of National Assembly Committees, Deputy Governors, former IGPs, and other senior security officers.
