The Delta State Government has said it will remain focused on governance and project delivery as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.

The position was reiterated by the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, while responding to allegations by former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, over alleged threats to his life and that of his family.

Omo-Agege had alleged that the threats were emanating from the Delta State Government House and warned that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori should be held responsible should anything happen to him or his family.

Aniagwu rejected the allegation, saying the state government had no evidence of any threat to Omo-Agege.

According to the commissioner, Governor Oborevwori was not in the business of threatening political opponents or residents of Delta State.

The government had previously denied Omo-Agege’s allegation. The former Deputy Senate President subsequently called for an independent investigation into reported attacks involving his supporters.

Government Explains Security Measures

Aniagwu said the security and welfare of residents remained central to the administration’s responsibilities.

He cited Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution and said the state government had engaged traditional rulers, local government chairmen, political leaders and religious leaders to strengthen security.

The commissioner also disclosed that the state had established a security trust fund to support security-related initiatives.

He said the government was working with security agencies and other stakeholders because maintaining security was a collective responsibility.

On the allegation involving Omo-Agege, Aniagwu said claims of threats should be supported by evidence that could be investigated by the appropriate authorities.

He also noted that Omo-Agege, as a former Deputy President of the Senate, had personal security arrangements.

Omo-Agege Camp Seeks Investigation

Despite the government’s denial, Omo-Agege’s camp has maintained that reported attacks involving his supporters and allegations of threats against him deserve investigation.

His representatives have called for an impartial probe into the circumstances surrounding the reported incidents.

The competing positions have emerged as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.

Aniagwu said the Oborevwori administration would not allow political disagreements to distract it from governance.

He said the government would focus on its record in office and the delivery of projects across Delta State.

The commissioner also dismissed concerns that political disagreements within the APC in the state could automatically translate into threats, noting that the party had attracted members from different political backgrounds.

He reiterated that the government would continue to work with relevant security agencies to maintain peace and protect residents.
