Abaji Moves to Boost Food Production, Distributes Fertilizer to Farmers

In a major push to strengthen food production and ease the burden on rural farmers, the Chairman of Abaji Area Council, Hon. Abubakar Umar Abdullahi, has flagged off the distribution of fertilizers and agrochemicals to farmers across the council.

The intervention, aimed at boosting agricultural productivity amid rising farming costs, is expected to support hundreds of rural farmers and enhance food security in the council and beyond.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony at the council secretariat on Thursday, Abdullahi, represented by the Speaker of the legislative arm, Hon. Abdullahi Baba Yahaya, described agriculture as the lifeblood of Abaji’s economy and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering farmers.

He said meaningful food security, economic growth, and sustainable development can only be achieved when farmers are equipped with essential farm inputs.

According to him, the fertilizer distribution is part of deliberate efforts by the council to improve farm yields, reduce production costs, and encourage large-scale cultivation during the current farming season.

The chairman issued a stern warning against the diversion or sale of the subsidized inputs, stressing that the intervention was strictly for agricultural use.

“These items are not for sale. They are meant to improve farm yields and increase food production in our communities,” he said.

He warned that anyone caught selling or diverting the inputs would be sabotaging the council’s efforts and depriving genuine farmers of critical support.

Abdullahi urged beneficiaries to maximize the opportunity by putting the inputs to proper use to ensure a bumper harvest, noting that improved harvests would translate into better incomes, job creation, and stronger economic growth.

He further highlighted Abaji’s vast fertile land and urged farmers—particularly youths and women—to take advantage of the council’s agricultural potential.

“Let us cultivate more land, increase production, and contribute meaningfully to food security in Abaji, the FCT, and Nigeria,” he said.

The chairman also reassured residents over the lingering power outage in the area, revealing that the council is in active discussions with the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and other stakeholders to restore electricity.

He acknowledged the hardship caused by the blackout and pledged swift intervention to restore normal power supply for residents and businesses.
