ALGON Dismisses Suit Over Alleged Dissolution of Kogi LG Chairmen, Backs Gov. Ododo’s Democratic Process
The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Kogi State Chapter, has dismissed as “ill-motivated, baseless and misleading” a purported lawsuit seeking to stop Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo from allegedly dissolving the elected chairmen of the state’s 21 local government areas.
In a statement signed by the ALGON Chairman in Kogi State, Hon. Tosin Olokun, on Thursday, the association described the legal action as speculative and lacking any factual foundation, insisting that Governor Ododo has neither announced nor contemplated dissolving democratically elected local government chairmen.

ALGON stated that reports suggesting an impending dissolution of the councils are false and intended to mislead the public while creating unnecessary political tension across the state.
The association clarified that the tenure of the current local government chairmen is expressly provided for under the laws of Kogi State, noting that all elected chairmen are serving a two-year term that is scheduled to expire in October 2026.
According to the statement, the natural expiration of the tenure of elected officials cannot be interpreted as dissolution, stressing that any claim to the contrary is legally untenable and politically motivated.
“At no time has the Governor of Kogi State announced or contemplated the illegal dissolution of democratically elected Local Government Chairmen in the state,” the statement read.
ALGON also debunked speculation that the Kogi State Government intends to appoint caretaker committees after the expiration of the current administration at the grassroots.
Instead, the association disclosed that the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) has already fixed October 2026 for fresh local government elections before the expiration of the current tenure, ensuring that newly elected or re-elected chairmen will assume office without any constitutional vacuum.
The body further distanced itself and all the 21 local government councils from the purported litigation, stating that neither ALGON nor any of its members has any connection with those behind the suit.
The association maintained that the action appeared to be a deliberate attempt by certain individuals to tarnish the democratic image of Kogi State and discredit the administration of Governor Ododo.
Reaffirming its confidence in the governor’s commitment to constitutional governance, the rule of law and democratic principles, ALGON pledged continued collaboration with the state government, KOSIEC and other stakeholders to ensure peaceful, free, fair and credible local government elections in October 2026.

The association urged residents of Kogi State to disregard what it described as unfounded allegations, insisting that there is no constitutional crisis, no planned illegal dissolution of elected councils and no threat to democratic governance at the grassroots.
ALGON also appealed to citizens to remain peaceful, law-abiding and supportive of the government as preparations continue for a seamless democratic transition across the state’s 21 local government areas.
