CSO Raises Transparency Questions Over Benue LG Road Contracts, Seeks Independent Probe

A Benue-based civil society organisation, the Alliance for Truth and Democracy (ATD), has called for an independent forensic investigation into road construction contracts reportedly awarded across the state’s 23 local government areas.

The organisation, in a statement signed by its President, Jerome Zoho, alleged that although Governor Hyacinth Alia announced contracts worth ₦5 billion for each council, the execution of the projects has become controversial following reports that contractors allegedly received offers amounting to only 10 per cent of the contract values.

ATD said the allegations, if established, raise significant questions regarding procurement processes, fiscal transparency, and accountability in the management of public resources.

The organisation also questioned what it described as limited public disclosure of key financial information, including federal allocations, internally generated revenue, local government finances, wage obligations, and security-related expenditures since the present administration came into office.

According to the group, concerns over public finance management have intensified amid persistent insecurity, deteriorating infrastructure, and socio-economic challenges confronting residents across the state.

It argued that the government owes citizens regular updates on the management of public resources, particularly given the substantial increase in federal allocations following the removal of fuel subsidy.

Among its recommendations, the organisation demanded an independent forensic audit of the local government road contracts, publication of procurement documents, disclosure of financial inflows into the state since May 2023, and investigation of any allegations involving misuse of public funds.

ATD maintained that transparent governance remains essential to restoring public confidence and ensuring prudent management of public resources.

As of the time of filing this report, the Benue State Government had not issued an official response to the allegations raised by the Alliance for Truth and Democracy.
