Group Challenges Critics of FCT Minister’s Rainbow Coalition
By Romeo Johnson
The Benue People’s Democratic Party, PDP, New Generation Movement has questioned the basis of opposition to the political activities of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, particularly his decision to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The group made its position known in a statement issued on September 23, 2026, following what it described as information about a planned protest against Wike in Benue State.
According to the movement, supporting a sitting President should not constitute a basis for political hostility, noting that Wike has publicly declared his support for Tinubu’s re-election.

Wike has explained that the Rainbow Coalition is a multi-party platform created to mobilise support for Tinubu and is not an APC structure. He has also stated that the PDP remains free to field candidates for governorship and legislative elections.
The Benue PDP group therefore asked what it described as a fundamental question: what exactly is Wike’s offence?
The movement argued that Wike’s political decision falls within the broader democratic process, where individuals and groups can support candidates of their choice.
It maintained that political differences should be addressed through dialogue and established democratic structures rather than protests or confrontation.
The group further urged the Benue State Government to concentrate on governance and the welfare of residents.
It identified security, development and the plight of displaced persons among the issues it believes should receive greater attention.

The movement also appealed to political leaders across party lines to avoid actions capable of deepening political divisions in the state.
It urged Wike to remain focused on his political activities despite the controversy surrounding the Rainbow Coalition.
