Breaking: Boko Haram Insurgents Attack Nigerian Army Base in Borno, Kill Eight Soldiers, Injure Several Others

At least eight Nigerian soldiers have been killed and several others injured following a deadly attack by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on a military base in Borno State.

The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, targeted a Nigerian Army formation in a remote part of the state, reigniting concerns over the persistent security challenges in Nigeria’s North-East region despite years of military operations against terrorist groups.

According to security sources, heavily armed insurgents stormed the military facility in large numbers, engaging troops in a fierce gun battle that lasted for several hours.

The attackers reportedly deployed sophisticated weapons and explosives during the assault, overwhelming some of the soldiers stationed at the base.

Sources familiar with the incident disclosed that at least eight soldiers lost their lives during the confrontation, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The wounded personnel were said to have been evacuated to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Military reinforcements were reportedly deployed to the area following the attack, forcing the insurgents to retreat after inflicting significant damage on the facility.

Preliminary reports indicate that military equipment and vehicles may have been destroyed during the exchange of fire, although authorities are yet to provide an official assessment of the losses.

Residents of nearby communities said they heard sustained gunfire and explosions throughout the night, causing panic among civilians. Some villagers reportedly fled their homes for fear of being caught in the crossfire.

The latest assault underscores the continuing threat posed by Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), both of which have intensified attacks on military formations and civilian communities in parts of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states in recent months.

Security analysts note that insurgents have increasingly focused on attacking isolated military bases to seize weapons, ammunition, and operational equipment. Such attacks have raised concerns about the capacity of terrorist groups to regroup and launch coordinated offensives despite repeated claims of their degradation by security forces.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian military had not issued an official statement on the incident. However, security sources said clearance operations were ongoing in the area, with troops pursuing the fleeing insurgents.

The attack comes amid renewed efforts by the Federal Government and security agencies to curb insurgency and restore lasting peace to the North-East, a region that has suffered more than a decade of violence, displacement, and humanitarian crises linked to terrorist activities.

Residents and community leaders have called for increased military presence and improved intelligence gathering to prevent further attacks and protect vulnerable communities from insurgent threats.
