Emeka Ugwuonye Ends Social Media Commentary on May, May Nation Dispute

Nigerian lawyer and founder of the DPA International Foundation, Emeka Ugwuonye, has announced the end of his social media engagement on the prolonged controversy involving actress May Edochie and her supporters, popularly known as “May Nation.”

In a statement released on Friday, Ugwuonye said the decision takes effect from 12:00 a.m. on July 11, 2026, marking what he described as the conclusion of the social media phase of the dispute.

Ugwuonye recalled that he had earlier indicated his intention to withdraw from the online debate after appearing on the KAA Truth podcast but said subsequent developments, including comments made during the Obasi podcast, compelled him to respond to what he described as false allegations against actress Judy Austin.

According to him, he also felt obligated to counter what he believed was a coordinated online campaign that could negatively affect Austin, her children, and her family.

The lawyer said he had faced months of online criticism after refusing to support what he characterized as the bullying activities of “May Nation,” adding that he was subjected to insults, ridicule, and false accusations throughout the period.

He explained that his public interventions were intended not only to defend himself and the DPA International Foundation but also to protect individuals he said had become targets of sustained online harassment.

Ugwuonye maintained that his objectives had now been achieved, arguing that the relevant facts had been presented to the public and that the foundation had demonstrated its willingness to defend itself and those under its protection.

While acknowledging that cyberbullying remains a significant concern, he expressed hope that more people would be encouraged to challenge online harassment whenever it occurs.

He disclosed that although public discussions on the matter would cease, legal actions—including civil cases and police investigations involving or supported by DPA—would continue through the appropriate judicial and law enforcement processes rather than on social media.

Ugwuonye said the DPA International Foundation would now redirect its attention to its primary areas of focus, including justice management, legal education, and the protection of vulnerable persons.

He also expressed appreciation to the foundation’s staff, supporters, and individuals who assessed the controversy objectively, while noting that criticism directed at him had prompted him to address issues relating to his professional status with the Nigerian Bar more decisively.

As part of the directive, Ugwuonye instructed administrators of DPA’s social media platforms to halt all posts and commentary relating to May Edochie and “May Nation,” except where updates are necessary on ongoing legal proceedings or matters directly affecting the organization.
