The Football Association has charged Manchester City midfielder Rodri with misconduct following remarks he made about the match officials after his side’s dramatic 2-2 draw away to Tottenham earlier this month.

The Spain international was visibly frustrated after City surrendered a two-goal lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 1 February.

The turning point came early in the second half when Dominic Solanke pulled a goal back for Spurs with a strike that City players felt should not have stood.

Solanke appeared to kick through the leg of City defender Marc Guehi in the build-up, but referee Robert Jones allowed the goal. The decision shifted the momentum, and Solanke later struck again to complete the comeback.

In his post-match interview, Rodri did not hide his disappointment and questioned the officiating.

“I know we won too much and the people don’t want us to win, but the referee has to be neutral,” he said.

“It’s not fair because we work so hard. When everything is finished, you are frustrated.”

Although the FA did not detail which specific comments led to the charge, it confirmed that Rodri is alleged to have acted in an “improper manner” by making remarks that “imply bias and/or question the integrity of a match official”.

He has until 18 February to respond.

City had been in complete control during the first half, racing into a 2-0 lead and appearing on course for three points. Solanke’s 53rd-minute effort, however, altered the tone of the contest.

Reflecting on that moment, Rodri suggested the game might have unfolded very differently.

“It’s the first goal they score, maybe [if] they don’t score this goal we win the game,” he said.

The midfielder also hinted at wider frustrations, suggesting City have been on the wrong end of contentious calls on several occasions this season as they chase the Premier League title. Pep Guardiola’s side currently sit second in the table, four points adrift of Arsenal.

“It’s one game and another game and another game, and it’s not possible,” added Rodri.

“Honestly, I never speak about referees, I respect their job massively. But they have to pay attention to these things.

“He (Solanke) kicked the leg, it’s so clear… It’s two, three games in a row and I don’t know why.”
