Nigerian Duo Secure Fresh Starts With Moves To Latvia, Niger Republic

Latvian club BFC Daugavpils have confirmed the signing of Nigerian striker Joel Yakubu on loan for the rest of the season, marking a new chapter in the young forward’s career.

Yakubu joins Daugavpils from Czech First Division side Slovan Liberec, a move expected to give him valuable first-team opportunities and consistent playing time.

The 20-year-old arrived at Slovan Liberec in 2024 from Abuja-based Mahanaim FC but is yet to feature for the club’s senior side.

Despite this, he impressed at the reserve level last season, scoring once and registering four assists in 16 appearances for Liberec’s second team.

His loan spell in Latvia is seen as a chance to gain experience, sharpen his attacking instincts and establish himself at a senior level.

Meanwhile, another Nigerian player has secured a new beginning, as Abdulbari Abayee Nura completes a transfer to Niger Republic outfit AS Police.

Nura makes the switch from Nigeria Premier Football League side Barau FC, where his time proved challenging and largely unproductive.

The midfielder struggled to make a lasting impact with the Kano-based club and was among several players released during the midseason transfer window.

His move to AS Police offers an opportunity to rebuild confidence and revive his career after a difficult spell. Nura previously featured for Katsina United and will now look to rediscover his form in the Nigerien league.
