Oyo Rescue: APM Backs UN Probe, Defends Governor Makinde Against Abduction Allegations
The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has thrown its weight behind Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for a United Nations (UN) investigation into the rescue operation involving the Oyo 44, describing the proposal as necessary to establish the truth and restore public confidence.
The party said an independent international probe would help dispel allegations and political narratives suggesting that the governor was complicit in the abduction of teachers and pupils—claims allegedly made by former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose and other political actors.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the APM National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, said the call for a UN investigation became imperative due to what he described as the politicisation of the unfortunate incident.
According to Yusuf, Governor Makinde, who has governed Oyo State for more than seven years, has maintained a strong record in tackling insecurity and played a leading role in the establishment of the South-West regional security outfit, Amotekun.
He argued that accusing the governor of complicity in the abduction was unfair and inconsistent with his administration’s security achievements.
“The proposed UN probe will ensure transparency, eliminate political interference, and provide an objective account of the circumstances surrounding the rescue operation,” Yusuf said.
He added that such an investigation would not only address public concerns but also provide useful recommendations for preventing similar incidents in the future while putting to rest speculations from various quarters.
The APM spokesman also criticised former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose over his comments on the matter, alleging that his statements were inflammatory and capable of heightening political tension in the South-West.
Yusuf recalled that Fayose had previously alleged that Governor Makinde planned to remove the Olubadan of Ibadan shortly after the monarch’s installation, describing the claim as unfounded and reckless.
“It is time for him to stop making dangerous and unverified allegations capable of creating unnecessary tension,” he stated.
The party further praised Governor Makinde for his handling of traditional leadership transitions in Oyo State, noting that his administration successfully oversaw the installation of the Soun of Ogbomoso, the Alaafin of Oyo, and most recently the Olubadan of Ibadan, without major disputes among the ruling houses.
Yusuf contrasted the peaceful succession process in Oyo State with the prolonged leadership dispute following the death of the Awujale of Ijebuland, describing Makinde’s approach as a model of effective governance.

The APM also urged the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to embrace the governor’s recommendation for a UN-led investigation as part of broader efforts to strengthen transparency and improve Nigeria’s response to security challenges.
According to the party, an independent international probe would enhance public trust, provide credible findings, and contribute to lasting solutions to the country’s growing security concerns.
