Akoko-Edo HoR 2027: A New Twist to Afagase’s Controversial Candidacy

Paul Johnson Afagase

It is becoming increasingly apparent that Mr. Paul Johnson Afagase may not have fully considered the legal implications of his political decisions before leaving the All Progressives Congress, APC, for the African Democratic Congress, ADC, after losing the APC House of Representatives primary to Otunba Oladele Bankole-Balogun.

What initially appeared to be a straightforward political realignment has now generated serious questions about the validity of his emergence as the ADC candidate. The issues are no longer purely political. They border on due process and compliance with electoral law.

Reports indicate that another aspirant had earlier emerged from the ADC’s primary process. This raises a critical question: how was that candidate replaced, and did the procedure comply with the Electoral Act 2026 (as amended) on nomination and substitution of candidates?

There are also concerns about the timing of Mr. Afagase’s exit from the APC and whether all constitutional and statutory requirements were duly met before his emergence under another political party. These issues have continued to attract public attention and legal scrutiny.

Taken together, these developments have cast a significant cloud over the candidacy. Rather than dissipating, the questions appear to be multiplying.

Ultimately, these are matters that can only be conclusively resolved through legal process. Should any interested party challenge the nomination before a court of competent jurisdiction, the court will determine whether the process complied with the law and whether the candidacy can stand.

For now, what is beyond dispute is that the electorate deserves clear and transparent answers. Voters are entitled to know that every candidate seeking public office emerged through a process that is lawful, credible, and beyond reproach.

The burden therefore rests on Mr. Afagase and the ADC to satisfactorily explain the circumstances surrounding his emergence as the party’s candidate. In an election where integrity, transparency, and due process are paramount, silence or ambiguity will only deepen public concern.
