Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed sadness over the recent killing of citizens by bandits and terrorists in some states of the country.
Atiku, in a statement made available to Naija News on Thursday against the backdrop of the killings in Woro, Kwara State and parts of Katsina and Benue states, lamented the growing insecurity in the country.
He submitted that the killing of innocent citizens is unacceptable and represents a failure on the part of the government.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain called on the government and the security forces to be more proactive in addressing the challenges.
“The reported massacres in parts of Kwara, Katsina and Benue are a damning confirmation that Nigeria has descended into a killing field.
“The scale and frequency of these attacks expose a catastrophic failure of the state to protect the lives of its citizens, especially the most vulnerable.
“Empty condemnations after mass burials are no longer acceptable. Security must be proactive, deliberate and preventive, not reactive. Communities repeatedly attacked must not be left as open hunting grounds for criminals.
“I am deeply pained by these killings. I call on the Federal Government, states and communities to act decisively and in concert to end this bloodletting.
“The murder of even one Nigerian is an unforgivable failure,” Atiku wrote.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has directed the military to wipe out the terrorists who attacked residents of Kiama Local Government Area in Kwara State and ensure total peace is restored in the area.
This was confirmed by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq while speaking to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, after meeting behind closed doors with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The Governor disclosed that based on the President’s directive, the first commander for Operation Savannah Shield has reported in Kwara State, and he’s hitting the ground running.
