President Bola Tinubu has given fresh assurances that Nigeria would overcome the challenges of insecurity and defeat the terrorists and bandits waging war against the country.

Speaking on Monday, while declaring open the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, which brought together the 36 state governors, President Tinubu assured that victory will be achieved.

He acknowledged the severity of the situation when he said the acts of terrorism have given the leaders of the country at all levels sleepless nights, but added that victory against the criminals is assured.

The Nigerian leader assured that the military and other security forces would be empowered to deal with the criminals and flush them out.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja ruled on Monday that the Nigerian Senate acted within its powers in suspending Kogi Central lawmaker, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

A three-member panel of Justices of the Appellate Court unanimously ruled that it was within the powers of the Senate to have suspended Uduaghan for misconduct.

The Court added that the Kogi lawmaker was unable to prove that parliamentary privilege or her constitutional rights were breached as a result of her suspension from the Senate.

However, it vacated the contempt proceeding and the ₦5 million fine that was awarded against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan over the satirical apology she made to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

The Appeal Court held that the contempt charge was not sustainable in law and ought not to have been entertained by the lower court.

More so, the appellate court, in its lead verdict that was delivered by Justice A. B. Muhammed, held that the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, was not wrong to have denied the Appellant, who was not on the official seat that was allotted to her during plenary on February 20, 2025, the opportunity to speak.

Former presidential candidate and leading hopeful for the 2027 elections, Peter Obi, on Monday led a group of protesters to the National Assembly to demand electoral reforms.

Naija News reports that Obi, who was accompanied by several supporters including activist Aisha Yesufu, was seen at the entrance of the parliamentary complex as the demonstrators pressed their demands.

Speaking on the protest ground Obi said, “Simple transmission. It’s not a difficult thing. Allow the election to go through the normal process. Whoever wins, we will accept. So why are you bringing in all sorts of confusion?”

The protesters gathered at the National Assembly to call for the approval of real-time electronic transmission of election results from polling units, a key provision in the Electoral Amendment Bill currently under consideration.

Their presence at the complex drew attention as they chanted and displayed solidarity in support of electoral transparency and credibility.

President Bola Tinubu on Monday (today) met with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Naija News understands that some political leaders from the state were also present at the meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting, held behind closed doors, comes amid the lingering political tension in Rivers State involving key stakeholders.

According to The Nation, sources familiar with the development said discussions were centred on issues affecting the state, although no official statement was released after the engagement.

The Senate on Monday assured President Bola Tinubu of its readiness to collaborate with the Executive to ensure the timely passage and effective implementation of the 2026 Appropriation Bill.

Naija News reports that the pledge was made by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, during a public hearing and interactive session on the 2026 budget organised by the Senate Committee on Appropriations at the National Assembly, Abuja.

Represented at the event by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, Akpabio reiterated the upper chamber’s commitment to its constitutional roles in oversight, accountability and legislative support aimed at stabilising the economy and improving national welfare.

Delivering a speech titled “From Budget to Impact,” Akpabio described the budget process as a moment of national introspection, warning against treating it as a routine legislative exercise.

“Budget hearings are not mere rituals of governance. They are moments of national self-examination, occasions when a nation pauses to ask itself hard questions: Where are we? Where are we going? And are our resources aligned with our aspirations?” he queried.

He noted that Nigeria was at a critical economic crossroads, battling inflation, infrastructural decay, rising unemployment, and persistent insecurity, challenges he said are felt daily by citizens across the country.

Calm returned on Monday to the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at Wadata Plaza, Abuja, despite heightened political tension over moves by a faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to reopen the complex after months of closure.

Naija News reports that the development followed an announcement by Samuel Anyanwu, who is acting as national secretary under the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led PDP caretaker committee, that the party headquarters would resume operations based on recent court rulings said to favour the group.

Anyanwu’s camp had cited “favourable judicial pronouncements” and the dismissal of a legal motion filed by rival groups seeking to compel the police to reopen the complex under their control.

However, as of Monday afternoon, the building remained shut, with security operatives maintaining a noticeable presence around the complex. No incidents of violence or confrontation were recorded.

The headquarters has been under police seal since November 2025, when an aborted attempt by rival factions to hold parallel National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings led to scuffles among supporters and forced law enforcement to intervene.

The shutdown has since become emblematic of the deepening crisis within the PDP, with party members split across multiple camps ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While Anyanwu’s group insists that legal victories support their claim to the building, rival factions have dismissed the announcement, insisting that control of the secretariat must await final resolution of ongoing litigation.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has opened up on the physical and tactical challenges faced by Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Raphael Onyedika during Nigeria’s campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco (AFCON).

Eric Chelle revealed that Victor Osimhen played through the tournament while managing a hamstring injury, a setback that required careful monitoring by the team’s medical staff.
