The Senate has amended its Votes and Proceedings of Wednesday, February 4 plenary, clarifying its position on Section 60(3) of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, amid controversy surrounding the transmission of election results.

The amendment followed a motion moved by the Senate Chief Whip, Mohammed Tahir Monguno, and subsequently endorsed by the Red Chamber.

According to the revised resolution, the Senate reaffirmed its adoption of electronic transmission of election results from polling units.

However, lawmakers introduced a safeguard to address possible technical failures.

Under the new clarification, where there is a communication glitch or technical failure that prevents the successful electronic transmission of results, the hard copy of Form EC8 – which contains results recorded at the polling unit – shall serve as the primary source of collation.

The form must be duly completed, stamped and signed by the presiding election officer, and counter-signed by party agents present at the polling unit.

The development effectively means that while electronic transmission remains the preferred mode, manual documentation through Form EC8 will serve as a backup in cases of technological disruption.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has confirmed a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Siminalayi Fubara to resolve the crisis rocking Rivers State.

Naija News reports that Wike confirmed the meeting on Tuesday while addressing journalists.

The minister noted the president’s role as a unifying figure whose leadership was essential in addressing the friction between the state’s executive and legislative arms.

The latest peace is said to be one of the outcomes of a fresh peace agreement brokered by President Tinubu between Fubara and his estranged political mentor and Nyesom Wike.

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has declared that zoning is not part of the constitution of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and that the party has no plans to zone its presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.

Naija News reports that Atiku made this known during a visit to former military president, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, at his Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State.

Speaking during the visit, the former vice president explained that zoning is not embedded in the ADC’s constitution.

According to him, among the major political parties, only the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has zoning formally enshrined in its constitution.

He noted that the ADC operates differently and does not constitutionally mandate rotational presidency or zoning of elective offices.

Despite addressing the zoning issue, Atiku stopped short of confirming whether he would seek the presidency in 2027 on the platform of the ADC.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has announced plans to deploy special forces to Kwara State and parts of Niger State as part of intensified military operations to address rising insecurity in the North-Central region.

Oluyede disclosed this on Tuesday while presenting the 2025 budget appraisal and defending the Armed Forces’ 2026 budget proposal before the House of Representatives Committee on Defence.

He said the move formed part of a broader strategy to consolidate gains recorded in the fight against insurgency and banditry across the country.

Providing an update on nationwide security operations, the CDS revealed that special forces had already been deployed to Benue and Plateau states, while a new Joint Task Force, code-named Operation Savannah Shield, would soon be inaugurated to focus on Kwara and parts of Niger.

He noted that although notable progress had been recorded in the North-East, insecurity persisted in parts of the North-West and North-Central regions, necessitating fresh deployments and coordinated operations.

There was a strong security presence at the Labour Party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday as the acting National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, took over the party’s headquarters from the faction led by Julius Abure.

Usman confirmed the development in a phone interview with Punch through her Senior Special Adviser on Media, Ken Asogwa.

When Punch visited the party’s national secretariat in Utako, Abuja, armed and stern‑looking policemen were stationed within and around the premises, while party banners and giant billboards featuring Abure and his executives had been replaced with those bearing Usman’s name.

Supporters, party members and journalists were subjected to strict security screening and asked to identify themselves before gaining access to the secretariat.

Sources within the Labour Party disclosed that the new leadership had also directed members to begin preparations to take over other state party secretariats across the country.

When asked to confirm whether the Otti‑backed faction had fully taken over the secretariat, Usman said the move was long overdue.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday, disclosed that President Bola Tinubu is expected to sign the amended Electoral Act into law by February, despite intensifying public outcry and nationwide protests over the controversial removal of the phrase “real-time” from clauses on electronic transmission of election results.

Naija News reports that Akpabio made the disclosure during Tuesday’s Senate plenary, while announcing an expansion of the Senate’s conference committee from nine to 12 members to align with the House of Representatives’ own delegation.

The Senate President’s remarks come as protests under the banner of #OccupyNASS continued at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, drawing civil society groups, opposition figures and human rights activists demanding electoral transparency.

Controversial singer Portable has shared private messages with his former partner, Queen Dami, to counter her claim that they are no longer in a romantic relationship.
