Urhobo Group Warns INEC over Supreme Court Judgment on Warri Delineation

The Urhobo ethnic nationality in Warri Federal Constituency has issued a strong warning to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to urgently implement a Supreme Court judgment on delineation in Warri South, Warri South West, and Warri North local government areas of Delta State.

In a statement dated February 17, 2026, signed by its leader, Hon. Mark Ikpuri and made available to Chief Mathias Olowu, Media Consultant to the Urhobos in Warri, the group accused INEC of defying the apex court by withholding delineation results conducted over a year ago.

The statement noted that INEC’s refusal to release the results has stalled the process, placing the commission in direct violation of the court’s directive for immediate action and public disclosure.

The Urhobos condemned INEC’s involvement in today’s All Progressives Congress (APC) ward congress in the constituency, describing it as “an outright illegality” that flouts the Supreme Court’s order barring electoral activities until delineation results are gazetted.

“Proceeding with the congress mocks the judiciary’s authority and risks igniting ethnic tensions among Urhobos, Itsekiris, and Ijaws in this oil-rich zone,” the group stated.

They warned that such actions could disenfranchise communities and repeat the bloody Warri crisis of 1999, which spread across the Niger Delta after perceived favouritism to the advantage of Itsekiri group.

“Why empower a tribe whose population barely fills one local government to dominate its neighbours?” the statement asked rhetorically.

The group demanded INEC immediately suspend all involvement in the congress and prioritise judicial compliance over “narrow political interests” to protect Nigeria’s democracy.

In a direct appeal to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the Urhobos urged him to intervene decisively, distance his administration from the irregularities, and avoid staining his legacy on justice and equity.

“Do not associate with illegality or activities that could spark a breakdown of law and order. Do not be painted as abetting the oppression of your own Urhobo kin,” they beseeched the governor.

They called on him to compel INEC to conclude the delineation exercise promptly, fostering peace and inclusivity among Delta’s ethnic groups.

The group also alerted National Security Adviser (NSA) Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the US Embassy, UK Embassy, and United Nations to intervene and prevent a total breakdown of law and order in the area.

The Urhobos insisted that swift action would promote lasting harmony in the politically volatile constituency.
