US Charges Nigerian Newbie Cop with Smuggling Drugs to Prisoner

A newly recruited detention officer in the United States has been dismissed and charged after authorities said she attempted to smuggle drugs into a correctional facility before the substances reached any inmates.

The officer, Amarachukwu W. Igwe, who joined the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office in July 2025, was arrested on 4 April following an internal investigation.

Officials said the alleged plan was uncovered before any narcotics entered the Alexandria Adult Detention Center or were distributed within the facility.

Investigators believe Ms Igwe intended to deliver the drugs to a prisoner, but the sheriff’s internal investigations unit intervened in time to prevent the attempt. She was subsequently taken into custody and processed at the Arlington County Detention Facility.

Ms Igwe is facing multiple charges, including delivery of drugs to prisoners, conspiracy to deliver drugs to prisoners, and possession of a Schedule III controlled substance.

Alexandria Sheriff Sean Casey confirmed that the officer had been dismissed with immediate effect, stressing that breaches of trust would not be tolerated.

“I have zero tolerance for actions that undermine the security of our facility,” he said. “Those who violate the public trust will face the full consequences.”

Authorities say investigations into the case are ongoing.
