Xenophobia Row: Tanzania Expels South Africans, Halts Trade

President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has announced a series of sweeping measures against South Africa amid rising diplomatic tensions linked to reported xenophobic attacks.

In a statement, the Tanzanian leader issued a 48-hour ultimatum directing South African nationals to leave Tanzania, citing concerns over the treatment of African migrants in South Africa.

She also ordered the immediate closure of borders between Tanzania and South Africa, alongside a suspension of all exports of Tanzanian goods to the country.

The development marks a significant escalation in relations between the two African nations, traditionally seen as allies on the continent.

In a strongly worded address, President Hassan criticised the South African government, accusing it of neglecting the historical support it received from fellow African countries during its struggle against apartheid.

She noted that countries such as Tanzania played key roles in supporting liberation movements and hosting exiles during the anti-apartheid struggle, stressing that such solidarity should not be forgotten.
