Sheikh Hamdan FC Seal Victory
The final, played in Gwagwalada, produced a closely contested encounter, with Sheikh Hamdan FC scoring the only goal of the match in the first half.
Despite efforts by Anagada United to find an equaliser after the break, Sheikh Hamdan FC maintained their lead until the final whistle to secure the championship.
The tournament featured 32 football teams drawn from the 10 political wards of Gwagwalada Area Council.
Tournament Organised to Promote Youth Development
The competition was organised through the Office of the Special Assistant to the Chairman on Sports and Recreational Development, in collaboration with the Gwagwalada Football Council.
The tournament was held under the supervision of the Supervisory Councillor for Education, Hon. Caleb D. Yakubu.
Speaking after the final and presentation of the trophy, Chairman Ikwa commended the organisers, participating teams, youths, residents and members of the media for their contributions to the success of the tournament.
Chairman Ikwa Announces Bigger Competition
Ikwa disclosed that the tournament was initially conceived as part of activities to commemorate his administration’s first 100 days in office.
He, however, said the competition was also designed as a rehearsal for a larger Chairman’s Cup expected to be organised within the next two or three months.
According to him, the proposed competition would be more comprehensive and could attract football teams from across the Federal Capital Territory.
Chairman Urges Young Players to Stay Focused
The chairman congratulated all the 32 participating teams, urging the players to see the tournament as more than a contest between winners and losers.
He encouraged the young footballers to remain hopeful and continue working towards achieving their ambitions, stressing that losing the current competition should not discourage them from pursuing success in future tournaments.
Ikwa also disclosed that the formal celebration of his administration’s first 100 days in office had been postponed.
He explained that the decision was taken to enable the council to concentrate on delivering quality ongoing projects across Gwagwalada Area Council.
