President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) women’s mobilisation machinery to step up political engagement across Nigeria, identifying women as a critical force in the party’s quest for electoral victory in 2027.

Tinubu issued the directive on Wednesday at the inauguration of the APC Presidential Campaign Council at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he commended women for their contributions to the party and the country’s democratic development.

The President specifically charged Dr Betta Edu, Director of Women Mobilisation of the campaign council, and her team to organise women across communities and convert their political support into effective grassroots participation.

“Women are the greatest mobilisers,” Tinubu said, according to the account of his remarks.

His message reinforces the importance of women’s networks in Nigeria’s electoral politics, where household relationships, market associations, community organisations and local political structures can shape voter engagement.

Edu Faces Nationwide Mobilisation Challenge

Edu and the Women Mobilisation Directorate are expected to coordinate engagement with women in rural and urban communities, markets, cooperatives, professional bodies and faith-based organisations.

The directorate has reportedly set a target of securing 40 million women’s votes for the Tinubu-Shettima ticket, with a mobilisation framework spanning 176,846 communities and structures in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The proposed approach prioritises household outreach, ward organisation, community meetings and polling-unit engagement.

The scale of the target makes coordination, reliable data and sustained contact with voters central to the directorate’s assignment.

Beyond campaign appearances, organisers will need to demonstrate how their networks are reaching eligible voters, explaining the administration’s policies and addressing concerns raised by women in their communities.

First Lady’s Role in Women’s Engagement

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s engagements with women and empowerment programmes are also expected to feature in the broader mobilisation effort.

At a pre-inaugural Women’s Summit and Empowerment Programme in Abuja on October 5, women stakeholders from across the country participated in an event that included the distribution of livelihood-support items such as motorbikes and farm trucks.

The programme linked women’s political participation with economic empowerment and community development.

For the APC, sustaining women’s support will depend partly on how effectively the campaign communicates its policies and responds to concerns involving livelihoods, business costs, education, healthcare and family welfare.

From Political Enthusiasm to Electoral Results

Edu has called for unity, discipline and coordinated grassroots participation among APC women, stressing the need for a structured network capable of operating beyond major campaign rallies.

The inauguration of the Presidential Campaign Council gives the party a formal framework for coordinating its preparations for the next general election.

Tinubu’s directive raises the political profile of women’s mobilisation while placing a demanding responsibility on campaign organisers to deliver tangible results.

As the 2027 election approaches, the effectiveness of the strategy will be judged not only by the size of campaign gatherings but also by the depth of community engagement, the credibility of political communication and the party’s ability to respond to voters’ priorities.
