The ongoing visit of former Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has drawn attention to the spiritual importance of Umrah, one of the cherished acts of worship in Islam.
Balarabe Abdullahi, the current Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Damaturu, Yobe State, was sighted in Madinah alongside Hon. Ibrahim Aliyu Nana, who represents Keffi West Constituency in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.
The two political figures are reportedly undertaking religious activities during their visit to Islam’s sacred land.
What Makes Umrah Special?
Umrah is often called the Lesser Hajj because it shares some rituals with the major Hajj pilgrimage. However, the two are distinct acts of worship with different requirements.
While Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and must be performed by eligible Muslims who have the necessary physical and financial capacity, Umrah can be undertaken throughout the year.
Its principal rites include Ihram, Tawaf around the Kaaba, Sa’i between Safa and Marwah, and Halq or Taqsir, which involves shaving or trimming the hair.
These acts symbolise devotion, humility and obedience to Allah.
For pilgrims, Umrah is more than a journey across national borders. It is an opportunity to reflect on their lives, seek forgiveness, strengthen their faith and pray for their families, communities and the wider Muslim Ummah.
The significance of Umrah is further highlighted by Islamic teachings on the forgiveness of sins and the spiritual reward attached to sincere worship. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also performed Umrah during his lifetime, establishing an important example for Muslims.
Madinah, where Balarabe Abdullahi and Aliyu Nana were sighted, holds a special place in Islamic history as the city associated with the Prophet Muhammad’s migration and final resting place. The principal rites of Umrah, however, are performed in Makkah.
As the former Speaker and the serving lawmaker continue their visit to Saudi Arabia, well-wishers can join in praying for the acceptance of their acts of worship and the fulfilment of their lawful supplications.
May Allah grant them forgiveness, strengthen their faith, accept their prayers and bring them home safely.
Amin.
